I. INTRODUCTION

Definitions.

1. In the body, an adhesion is an abnormal attachment or stickiness between two or more body tissues.

2. Scarring.  Adhesions are a type of scarring or scar tissue that causes two tissues to stick together in an abnormal way.

3. A substitute structure.  Adhesions may also be viewed as a kind of substitute physical and chemical structure that can develop in the body.

In other words, adhesions can replace or substitute for other structures such as muscles, tendons, ligaments and even bones that have become weakened or are out of place, or are not functioning for some other reason.

In this case, the adhesion (s) are compensations and adaptations to some kind of weakness or other problem in the body.

4. A toxic yang condition of the body.  Adhesions are a yang adaptation or condition in macrobiotic terminology because they are usually hard, dense, and compact.  However, they are always a toxic yang condition, meaning they are not normal.  In all cases, they involve a pathological hardening, toughening or fibrosis of the body tissues.

5. Philosophically, any abnormal kind of attachment.  An adhesion can be an abnormal attachment between two or more surfaces, objects, tissues, people, or even ideas.  This is important because adhesions do not only occur between body tissues.

Opposites.  By considering the opposite to a definition, we may better understand a word or idea such as adhesion.  Two concepts that are opposites of an adhesion are:

A. Cohesion.  This means two or more surfaces, tissues, objects or ideas that are lined up or related to one another in a harmonious, synergetic way or normal way.

B. Unattached or unrelated.  This means two or more surfaces, tissues, objects or ideas that not attached to one another.

Most of this article concerns physical body adhesions.  However, other types of adhesions are mentioned near the end of the article.

Why adhesions are important. They can interfere with the blood supply and the nerve supply to various parts of the body.  They also restrict bodily movement and cause poor posture.  They can deform and constrict organs, glands and other structures, affecting their activity.

In some cases, they become vicious cycles, in which case they are even worse.  For all these reasons, adhesions often cause disease and shorten a personÕs lifespan.

WHERE ADHESIONS OCCUR

The most common site of adhesions is in the fascia layers, which are under the skin.  However, they can occur at other sites, including the cell membranes, the intercellular substance and matrix, the muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, organs and elsewhere.

STICKY TISSUES AND THE QUALITY OF STICKINESS IN THE BODY

Adhesions are like having ÒstickyÓ, molecules, cells, tissues and other structures and substances in the body.  This is not normal.  While tissues should work together harmoniously, the word adhesions, when used in the context of health and the body, always denotes a pathological type of stickiness or glue-like consistency or tendency of the body substances and tissues.

This is a critical concept in health and disease that is not addressed much in allopathic medicine.  The tissues, cells, and organs must slip easily over one another in order for a person to be healthy.  This is how the tissues can best respond to stimuli, adapt to stress, and generally ply their way through life in a flexible and correct manner.

Aging and adhesions.  One of the prime signs of aging is a loss of flexibility of the tissues.  This may be partly an effect of adhesions.  The body tissues and even organs and other structures become somewhat glued together, and cannot move freely over one another.

II. CAUSES OF ADHESIONS

Unresolved inflammation is the basic cause.  The main cause of adhesions appears to be inflammation that is not correctly resolved.

Nutritional imbalances.  Unresolved inflammation is often, or perhaps always, due to nutritional imbalances.

One of these is copper toxicity.  This interferes with the disulphide bonds in connective tissue structures.

Another cause is the presence of the so-called amigos (high levels of oxide forms of iron, manganese, aluminum, nickel, cobalt, boron and, at times, other minerals).  These are extremely pro-inflammatory chemical compounds that cause many problems in the body.  This topic is discussed below in more detail.

Zinc deficiency and silicon deficiency are other causes of adhesions.  These minerals tend to give the tissues flexibility and a slippery quality.  For example, think of the smoothness of glass, a material made of silica.

Trauma.  Chronic inflammation may also be caused by a trauma such as a surgery, a fall, or something else.  This induces inflammation and also causes nutritional deficiencies that the body cannot overcome, resulting in chronic inflammation.

At one level, an adhesion is a type of trauma.  A trauma, by definition, causes a change in the body and/or brain that cannot be easily overcome.  One is somehow ÒstuckÓ afterwards and unable to return the body to its previous conditions.

Infection.  Chronic inflammation may also be due to a chronic infection.  This is common.  It is part of an incomplete response of the body to an infecting organism.  Infections may cause adhesions by various mechanisms:

A. Inflammation from the body fighting the infection.

B. Nutrient depletion as a result of fighting the infection.

C. Endotoxins and/or exotoxins from bacteria, viruses, parasites and even fungi may poison the tissues at a local level.

D. Other changes in the tissues around an infection site may play a role.

HOW ADHESIONS CAUSE ILLNESS

              1. Adhesions restrict circulation of the blood.  This impairs cellular nutrition.  It also stops or reduces hormones and other signaling substances from reaching the cells.

2. Adhesions can restrict circulation of the lymph.    This interferes with the elimination of waste products from the cells.

3. Other restrictions and constrictions. Adhesions in the colon can cause constipation. Adhesions in the urinary tract can cause urine to remain in the kidneys, or the bladder may not empty properly.

In conditions such as chronic hepatits and cirrhosis, the liver does not function well due to fibrosis and adhesions in this organ.

            4. Adhesions can restrict the flow of subtle energy or ether in the acupuncture meridians and other energy channels.  This is very important.  These meridians or channels must remain open for life to continue.

For more on this topic, read Channel Therapy, The Side Channels, The Conception Vessel and Reflexology on this site.

            5. Adhesions alter and generally restrict posture and physical movement of the body.  They can cause chiropractic and other structural imbalances such as kyphosis (hunching forward), scoliosis (sideways deviation of the spine), torquing of the spine (twists), bone deformities, ligament deformities, and other structural problems.

When a person says ÒI have a bad backÓ, or Òa bad neckÓ, for example, it often means the person has restrictions or adhesions in the back, neck, or elsewhere.  This can alter the personÕs posture and movement.  It also often tires the person out faster, and causes pain or other discomfort.

6. Indirectly, adhesions can alter oneÕs thinking and feeling.  This may seem unusual.  However, by holding the body in unusual positions and by altering the flow of subtle energy through the energy channels of the body, adhesions can influence oneÕs thoughts and feelings.

7. We believe one can also have adhesions in the brain.  This is related to #6 above.  These adhesions alter the gross and subtle architecture of the brain.

The brain should work, in part, like a radio.  The sulci of the brain act, in part, like antennas.  If the antenna is deformed, it will affect thinking and other aspects of mental functioning.

Amazingly, during a development program, the shape of the brain can correct itself.  When this occurs, their hair analysis often reveals Anchor Patterns or less often a balanced pattern.

AlzheimerÕs disease and some other brain diseases may involve adhesions.

QUANTITIES AND QUALITIES OF ADHESIONS

Adhesions may have many different qualities or characteristics, since they may have multiple causes.  For example:

1. Simple or superficial adhesions.  Some are quite superficial and temporary, such as tightness in a muscle after exercise, or even after sleep.  These Òwork outÓ easily and quickly.  These usually only involve two adhered tissues.

2. Deep and complex.  Others are much more permanent and difficult to undo, erase or untwist.  They may involve multiple layers of fascia, connective tissue or other layers of organs and tissues.

The adhered tissues can be twisted one over another in very complex fashions.  These are much harder to ÒunwindÓ.  They literally must be unwound one layer at a time.  This usually takes years, if it can be done at all.

            3. Chemical composition.  The type of chemical substances involved also affect adhesions.  For example, some are made of copper compounds, while others contain cadmium or other toxic metals.  Each will have its own qualities.

III. CORRECTION OF ADHESIONS

For the biochemical aspects of adhesions, development science is one of the few ways to reduce some adhesions in the body.  Let us address some major biochemical imbalances associated with adhesions.  They include:

            1. Reduced energy production in the cells.  This shows up on a hair mineral analysis as an imbalanced oxidation rate, imbalanced mineral ratios, a low phosphorus level, and other imbalances.

            2. The presence of toxic metals, toxic chemicals, and improper chemical compounds in the body.  Everyone has some of these, but the problem gets worse if one has more of them.

            3. Subtle deficiencies of various minerals, vitamins and other chemical substances needed for life.  These include the omega-3 oils, for example, which help maintain flexibility of the cell membranes.  Vitamins A and D, along with vitamin E, and other fatty substances are also needed.  Pasteurized milk contains damaged fat, as does hydrogenated and trans-fats, which cause more adhesions at certain cellular levels.

Selenium and silicon, for example, along with zinc and lithium, actually give substances a slippery, smooth texture that tends to undo some adhesions.  The skin of fish such as sardines, for example, is high in selenium that is needed for the fish to navigate or slip through the water without much resistance.

Another substance in nature that is high in selenium and silicon is corn silk.  Here again, one notes the smooth, glassy appearance of this substance.  In fact, the corn plant, even the grossly genetically modified plant, is rather high in silicon and selenium, two elements that help reduce adhesions in the body.

Other smooth, glassy types of substances in nature that are high in silicon-based substances include glass, some plastics, and even the newer computer chips that are made of silicon or germanium.  These are needed to move electricity so it slips and slides along faster and smoother without interference.

Inside of our nervous system and brain, electrical impulses must be able to move freely along the nerves.  Also, a certain amount of mechanical slipping and sliding is absolutely required.

HOW DEVELOPMENT HELPS WITH ADHESIONS

Development science directly addresses the causes of adhesions, and how to correct adhesions at the deepest levels.

For example, copper imbalance is known to be one of the main instigators of adhesions, scars, scoliosis and other connective tissue types of adhesions in the body.  This is not usable copper.  It is a form or several forms of copper that are so electronegative or irritating that they cause the tissues to adhere in abnormal ways.

Harmful copper compounds also damages the normal types of tissue attachments, which are called sulfur-sulfur or disulfide type bonding.  This type of tissue binding is not pathological or ÒadheredÓ.  Unlike adhesions, disulfide bonds are more flexible.  They are used in all flexible or connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments, muscles and elsewhere.

Adequate sulfur is also important to prevent adhesions because it is involved in the disulfide bonds of connective tissue.  Vegetarian diets tend to be low in some bioavailable sulfur compounds.  This is one of the main problems of all vegetarian diets, no matter how nutritious and healthful they may be in other ways.

OTHER WAYS TO CORRECT ADHESIONS

The problem of adhesions is as old as mankind.  Older methods to deal with adhesions include practices such as stretching, chirpractic, Rolfing, structural integration therapy (similar to Rolfing) and yoga.

Today, yoga is not working as well.  The bodies are too ill and we find yoga often causes soft tissue injuries.  In part, this is because the yoga teachers are not careful enough.

However, it is also because the soft tissues and connective are weak, brittle and hardened with toxic metals and toxic chemicals.  For this reason, we donÕt recommend yoga today, especially bikrum yoga or Òhot yogaÓ.  More injuries occur with this type than with any other.  Instead, we suggest the following methods to undo adhesions:

1. Make the body more yang.  This is done with a development program, especially the cooked vegetable diet and the proper supplements, and even oneÕs thinking and emotional habits.  To read more about this, read Yin Disease on this site.

2. Modern physical methods.  These include stretching exercises, massage, and manipulation of the tissues.  In particular, Rolfing or structural integration, visceral manipulation, and other types of deep tissue work or bodywork may be helpful.  These therapies, in general, are excellent and complement development science as they seek to balance the body in a physical and structural way.

Women should go only to a female Rolfer or massage therapist for safety reasons.

Chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation may also be helpful, but often less so than stretching and bodywork.

3. We use simple twisting and stretching of the neck and the joints myself every day, and it is a slow process.  For details, read The Spinal Twists.

Warning: We do not recommend physical therapy for adhesions, in many cases.  The reason is that often the goal of the therapy is to strengthen certain muscles to compensate for the adhesions that may be upsetting posture or body movement.

This is not the same as getting rid of the adhesions.  In fact, it can strengthen or reinforce the adhesion.

The same thing happens in many yoga classes.  One feels better because one strengthens certain muscles that compensate for adhesions.  However, this is not the same as breaking up and removing the adhesion.

A good rule is that if one must keep doing yoga or exercise or physical therapy to maintain oneself pain-free or moving better, then the therapy is not getting rid of the adhesion, but only compensating for it.  It is best to get rid of the adhesion.

4. Deep breathing.  For adhesions in the chest, abdominal areas and back, breathing deeply into these areas can be most helpful.

5. Gentle exercise helps some adhesions, but it must be gentle.  Otherwise, exercise can make things worse.  The reasons include:

1. Exercise easily depletes nutrients needed to maintain the tissues.

2. Exercise usually move the body in repetitive ways that work only certain muscles, tendons and ligaments, leading to more damage to them and not breaking up old patterns.

3. Exercise takes up time and energy that is better spent resting, and doing other methods to break up adhesions described below.

This is an important reason why we never recommend vigorous exercise during a development program.  Most peopleÕs tissues are so weak, diseased and adhered that exercising actually causes more adhesions.

6. Red heat lamp sauna therapy.  This can be excellent to help undo some types of adhesions.  This type of sauna provides light frequencies that seem to help reduce many types of cellular and structural adhesions, reducing pain and causing relaxation at many levels.

7. Other heat therapies such as hot water baths, steam baths and others also have some effect in this area.  This is one reason these baths have been popular with mankind for thousands of years.

Sunbathing, which is an infrared heat therapy, is helpful for reducing some adhesions.  The problem with it today is the high level of ultraviolet exposure.  Sunscreen helps this problem, but the sunscreen is usually a highly toxic brew, so we donÕt recommend using suncreen.

Just limit your sunbathing time and most people wonÕt need sunscreen.  To avoid skin and other cancers, follow a development program carefully, making sure you eat a lot of cooked, preferred vegetables with each meal.  For details, read Food For Daily Use.

8. The pulling down mental exercise.  This moves energy downward through the body from the head to the feet.  The movement of etheric energy downward through the body raises its vitality and helps heal all types of injuries, traumas and other wounds.  For details, read The Pulling Down Exercise.

9. Electrical machines such as TENS and other stimulators are used to break up some mechanical adhesions in the body.  A problem with most of them is that they may introduce stray electrical or magnetic frequencies into the body that may be harmful.

OTHER TOPICS RELATED TO ADHESIONS

SCLEROSIS

Sclerosis is a condition somewhat related to adhesions.  It is a form of adhesion, in which certain cell types replace normal cell types in the brain (multiple sclerosis, AlzheimerÕs plaques, etc.), in the arteries (arteriosclerosis and fatty or calcium plaques), in the muscles and elsewhere.

Sclerosis might be considered another word for adhesions.  However, sclerosis is more specific in that other cell types and structures replace the normal cell types in these situations.

Interestingly, on a development program, these aberrant cell structures and types generally melt away.  This would indicate that they represent Òband-aidsÓ or ÒcrutchesÓ that the body literally constructs when the normal tissues have become weakened, in some cases.  This is definitely the case with arterial plaques that seem to protect the artery from possible breakage or aneurisms.

In the case of other types of sclerosis, in places like the brain, the plaques will also disappear and be re-absorbed as the underlying cell structures heal.  Here the plaques probably do not represent adaptations.

WHY DOES SURGERY OFTEN CAUSE ADHESIONS?

Adhesions are a major complication of some types of surgery such as bowel surgery, esophageal surgery and perhaps others.  The reasons include:

1. Trauma to the tissues tends to cause and worsen most adhesions.

2. Infection can worsen adhesions during and after surgery.  Subtle infections from surgery and hospitals are extremely common and many go unreported and undetected.

3. Damage due to the chemical agents used, such as anesthesia drugs, antibiotics and others that damage the liver and weaken the patient.

4. Other. Even the sewing thread and the surgeon pulling and stretching the organs and tissues to move them aside so he can work can contribute a little, as can blood loss, since blood contains many nutrients and most people are very deficient in some nutrients.

This is one reason that surgical outcomes would improve a lot if surgeons insisted that patients who will undergo surgery eat better diets and take basic nutritional supplements.

DEHYDRATION AND ADHESIONS

Adhesion problems can become far worse if a person:

1. Does not drink enough water,

2. Drinks a type of water that does not hydrate the body well.  Examples are reverse osmosis water and some alkaline water.

3. Consumes substances that deplete water such as caffeine, sugars (even in fruit and juices) and/or alcohol.

This may occur for a simple reason that the tissues are not well-hydrated.  However, dehydration affects circulation, elimination of waste materials, and many chemical reactions.  See the article Water For Drinking on this site for more on the subject of drinking water.

THE PROBLEM WITH REMEDIES, IN RELATION TO ADHESIONS

Remedies, as we use the word on this website, means any substance, method or procedure that does not address the whole system level of the body.  Development programs are whole body level programs, and rarely require the use of remedies.

However, most healing methods are remedy methods.  This includes most drug therapy, most herbs, all homeopathy, intravenous therapies, most vitamin and mineral therapies, most exercise and physical therapy methods, and others.

A problem with remedy healing methods is they are more likely to cause adhesions in the body.  This is due to their toxicity and that they upset body chemistry.

They can offer symptomatic relief.  However, they tend not to restore the whole body system to its previous state of health, and at times, they will cause adhesions.

WHAT IS SCARRING?

What is called scarring is nothing more than adhesions in the tissues that are visible, or can be felt or palpated with oneÕs hand.

Unfortunately, most adhesions cannot be felt.  They go undetected and are not dealt with by most medical and holistic doctors and practitioners.  At least, with scars one is aware that something ugly has appeared.  What most people are unaware of is the ugliness inside the body caused by scarring or adhesions due to their diets, their lack of rest, their lack of water, and their unhealthful lifestyles.

IV. OTHER INTERESTING ASPECTS OF ADHESIONS

CO-DEPENDENT RELATIONSHIPS

Adhesions can occur between people.  Co-dependent relationships are one example.  In other words, they are a type of unhealthy ÔstickinessÕ in the way one relates to others.  For details, read Codependency on this website.

ALL ADDICTIONS ARE AN ADHESION PHENOMENON

If one is addicted to anything, one is attached in an unhealthy way or ÔstuckÕ to a substance, behavior or something else.  This is an interesting way to view all addictions.

We do not find that adhesions in the body, however, are necessarily related to substance addictions.  For details, read Addiction, Carbohydrate Addiction, Sugar Addiction, and Medical Marijuana.

NEUROSES, FIXATIONS, AND OBSESSIONS CAN BE VIEWED AS ÔMENTAL ADHESIONSÕ.

For example, a person who is neurotic or obsessed will keep coming back to a theme or way of thinking in a pathological manner.  It is as though their thinking is ÔstuckÕ on a topic or way of perceiving life.

Apparently their minds cannot Òslip and slideÓ, or move freely from thought to thought, or from subject to subject.  Instead they become caught and inflexible.  Viewing neurosis and obsessions as a type of adhesion phenomenon is interesting and may help some people to overcome this common mental affliction.

ADHESIONS ARE A FEATURE OF PHYSICAL LIFE

This means that physical life as we know it is a type of adhesion to physicality and matter.  This is another level of understanding adhesions.  However, it is important because as one develops mentally and spiritually, one undoes oneÕs attachments and adhesions to the physical world.  For details, read Letting Go, The Pulling Down Exercise, and Introduction To Development.

ALL MASS ATTRACTION, SUCH AS BETWEEN PLANETS, CAN BE VIEWED AS ADHESIONS

The cause of gravity is ether pressure and BernoulliÕs principle.  This is not abnormal, so perhaps we should not call it an adhesion phenomenon.  However, mass attraction can be viewed as a type of ÔstickinessÕ between all objects in the universe.  For details about the cause of mass attraction, read The Ether Theory.
