Dr. Paul Eck once remarked to me that a science that was close to his work in some ways is acupuncture.  He knew that acupuncture and his mineral balancing science both:

1. Integrate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual activity of the body.

2. Focus on balancing and strengthening the body, rather than finding and correcting “disease entities”.  Healing is a sort of side effect that comes when the body is balanced and developed.

3. Use somewhat similar corrective products.  However, acupuncture uses more herbs, while our development programs use the much purer modern nutritional products.  See below for more on Chinese herbs.


In addition, Dr. Eck was not aware that both sciences:

1. Are development sciences. (Dr. Eck did not know about or teach development).

2. Identify and use the concepts of the subtle energy centers, the three dantiens, the subtle energy channels, and indeed all of the subtle anatomy discussed on this website.

3. Rely upon advanced understanding of yin and yang.

4. Identify and describe many of the same metabolic patterns that occur in the body.  Both sciences even use some of the same words and phrases to describe them.  These are the hair mineral patterns such as step down (stepping in acupuncture), step up (stepping out in acupuncture) and several dozen others.




1.Names of metabolic patterns. Many of the acupuncture pattern names used in this article are taken from very advanced acupuncture and will be unfamiliar to all Western practitioners of acupuncture.

2. We believe that acupuncture, as taught today, is incorrect.  This is very unfortunate, but common in older sciences.  One reason is that the real masters of the science do not want to teach it to their enemies.  Therefore, they:

A. Keep some information secret from the beginning students until one is far along and can be trusted.  Often, students need to train for several hundred years before the truth is shared.

B. In the past, and perhaps today, if a master acupuncturist was captured and forced to share knowledge, he or she purposely changed it to disguise the truth.

This is why some of the acupuncture material in this article is not familiar to Western acupuncturists.  We did not make up the patterns, as some people tell us we have done.  Also, we are not wrong about yin and yang, as many acupuncturists also tell us.  

3. Hair washing.  Everything in this article, and indeed on this website, applies only to hair mineral analyses from laboratories that do not wash the hair at the laboratory.  Most mineral testing labs wash the hair, which ruins the accuracy of the readings.  For details, read Controversy in Hair Analysis.

4. Needling problems.  We have observed some problems in people after acupuncture sessions.  These do not occur because the practitioner is not skilled.  They occur because acupuncture is very ancient, and conditions have changed on planet earth.  Two recommendations for anyone contemplating acupuncture treatments are:

A. Make sure the practitioner begins and ends by needling the conception vessel on the front of the body at each session. This is essential today, although it is not widely taught and was not as needed in the past.  If an acupuncturist does not do this, he or she may inadvertently unbalance the third energy center with the acupuncture needles.

B. Avoid Chinese herbs, including the ones used in acupuncture.  They are all toxic and will slow development.  We know this sounds very harsh.  However, hair mineral analyses reveal that most herbs, including all Chinese herbs, contain toxic metals.  This includes even the most expensive, organic, wild-crafted, and best brands of toxic metals. 

This is also a modern problem.  Several thousand years ago the herbs were much purer because the entire planet was much less contaminated.  Chinese and other herbs can still work, but they also leave toxic deposits in the body that are harmful.




We contend that all the bodies are too yin today.  This is not taught to most acupuncturists, we believe.  The causes are pollution with ionizing radiation, microwave and radio frequency pollution, exposure to toxic metals and toxic chemicals in the food, water and air, and eating food that is low in minerals (minerals are more yang) and that contain yin pesticides and other yin chemicals.                                                  For this reason, we seek to make the bodies more yang and we avoid healing and detoxification methods that make the body more yin.




A more yang constitution in acupuncture is the same as fast oxidation. A more yin constitution is the same as slow oxidation.




Here the two sciences differ somewhat.  We find the macrobiotic conception of yang and yin foods works better than the TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) classification.  We believe the present Chinese system has been altered, which can occur over the centuries.

This causes some acupuncturists to dismiss development science, which is unfortunate.  In fact, it is one of the few areas in which the two sciences diverge.


Macrobiotic classification of yang and yin foods. Eggs, meat, poultry, and fish are more yang in that order from most yang to less yang.  Grains and cooked vegetables are more balanced foods.  Legumes (beans), raw vegetables, fruit (especially raw), nuts, seeds, sugars, alcohol are more yin – in that order from slightly yin to very yin. 




These are all quite yin.  For that reason, we use a minimum of them all.  This is most important if you want to develop quickly.  Do not add products to your program.  We know about almost all available products, and if we want you to take them, we will suggest them.

Most nutritionists and doctors do not understand this, but with the proper program, we do not need many anti-oxidants, adaptogen herbs, anti-inflammatories and other supplements.  They get in the way, even if they provide temporary symptomatic relief.  When people report problems on a program, often they are taking products we don’t recommend.

Especially avoid medical and recreational drugs and most herbs due to toxicity.  Also, please stay away from homeopathic remedies.  They are toxic, although they seem harmless.  They are also extremely yin and quite dangerous for this reason.


Healing Procedures.  Heating and drying the body is always more yang.  We recommend the red heat lamp sauna, in part for this reason.

We use coffee because it is a yang herb that is not too toxic.  It was not available in China years ago, so it is not in the acupuncture books, but it works well in an enema, which is more yang than drinking it.  We do not recommend drinking coffee, although we allow one cup daily.

Foot reflexology is quite yang in Chinese medicine, and highly recommended as part of our development programs.

Twisting the spine or chiropractic care is another yang technique used in both sciences.  The pushing down mental exercise is also very yang because it moves energy downward and inward.

Rest, relaxation and sleep have a yang effect tend to be more yang today.  They activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which has a more yang effect.

Mild or gentle exercise has a yang effect.  Vigorous exercise has a more yin effect because it tears down the body and keeps the sympathetic nervous system active.  The sympathetic system has an immediate yang effect and speeds up the oxidation rate.  However, if it continues, it has a catabolic and yin effect that is very harmful.

For this reason, we recommend only limited and gentle exercise in spite of what others say about the value of exercise.  For more on this topic, please read Exercise and Balancing The Autonomic Nervous System on this website.

Deep breathing has a definite yang effect today.  It brings in more yang oxygen, and helps reduce stress, a yin toxin.




The International Journal of Acupuncture And Oriental Medicine, 1995;6 (1-4) 26-29, published an article entitled How Does Traditional Chinese Medicine Work – An Atomic Answer.  In it, the author notes the vitamin and mineral formulas that are used in development science to correct fast and slow oxidation are very similar to ancient Chinese acupuncture herbal formulas used to correct yang and yin conditions in the body.




More yang minerals.  Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are more yang minerals.  Of these, calcium and phosphorus are more yang than magnesium.

A calcium level that is lower than about 40 mg% is more yang.  This is often associated with a faster oxidation rate.  A calcium level greater than about 40 mg% is more yin.  This is often associated with a slow oxidation rate.

A magnesium level that is lower than about 6 mg% is more yang.  This is often associated with a faster oxidation rate.  A magnesium level greater than about 6 mg% is more yin and often associated with a slow oxidation rate.

A phosphorus level above about 14 mg% is more yang.  A level above about 16 mg% is even more yang, and indicates some rapid development on a hair mineral analysis, a process that is more yang in nature. 

A phosphorus level below about 12 mg% appears to be an indicator of reduced liver/gall bladder meridian activity, in our experience.  It is also somewhat more yin.


More yin minerals.  Sodium and potassium are more yin minerals.  Of these, sodium is more yang than potassium.




Most, if not all of the nutrient trace minerals such as zinc, chromium, selenium, iron and others are somewhat yang today, although this may not have been true in the past.  Note there are different compounds, isotopes or molecular weights, and other structures of each of the minerals, and some are more yang while others are more yin.  The more toxic compounds have a more yin effect today, as a general rule.


            More yang trace minerals.  These include iron, zinc and selenium.  In development, these are called “the male minerals”.


            More yin trace minerals.  These include copper, manganese, and iodine.  In development these are called “the female minerals”.




These are called toxic yang in acupuncture. They may be yang in nature, but they always have a yinnizing effect on the body due to their toxicity.  Unfortunately, most herbs contain some of them, including Chinese herbs used by acupuncturists.




These are more modern toxins that affect everyone and disturb traditional Chinese medical diagnostic methods.  They include:


Ionizing radiation.  This is everywhere on earth and is a serious problem.  It is carried on some toxic metals such as uranium 235 and 238, and a few others elements such as cesium, strontium, iodine and others. 

Ionizing radiation has extremely yin effects and causes all the bodies to become more yin today than ever before.

Electromagnetic emissions.   These are growing, especially in cities.  The sources include cell phone towers, cell phones, computers, television sets, radios, wifi (wireless networks), smart electric meters, home and other wiring, automobile and aircraft EMF emissions, microwave relay stations, and more.  They also have a yin effect on the bodies today.

Toxic chemicals.  Thousands of chemicals are everywhere, and in every person.  They, too, always have yin effects.

Mineral-depleted foods and refined and processed food.  This is perhaps the most serious yin toxin today.  Acupuncturists are not taught the severity of the problem and its yin effect on the bodies.  It also upsets traditional Chinese diagnostic assessment, at times badly.

The combination of these yin toxins is to make all the bodies much more yin today. 

This is the reason development insists upon a more yang diet, more yang nutritional supplements and more yang healing and detoxification procedures.

It is why we suggest everyone avoid:

- all fruit and sweets

- bathing too often

- the use of all smoothies, protein powders, other food powders, food bars and other yin food products!




A sodium/potassium ratio of about 2.5 to 5 in a human being is more yang.  A sodium/potassium ratio less than about 2.5 is more yin.  However, if the ratio is very high (above about 25), it may indicate a more yin condition.

A calcium/magnesium ratio of about 6.7 is the most yang.  A slightly lower ratio is a little more yang.  A high ratio above about 10 appears to be a more yin or a yin deficiency indicator.

A calcium/potassium ratio less than about 4 is a more yang indicator.  It is more associated with a fast oxidation rate and an alarm stage of stress in development.  A calcium/potassium ratio greater than about 4 is a more yin indicator.  It is more associated with a slow oxidation rate, or cold in acupuncture terminology.

A sodium/magnesium ratio greater than about 4.17 is a more yang indicator or hot in acupuncture.  It is more associated with a fast oxidation rate.  A sodium/magnesium ratio less than about 4.17 is a more yin indicator or cold in acupuncture.  It is more associated with a sluggish or slow oxidation rate in development science, and with an exhaustion stage of stress.




Blood deficiency.  This is the same as a ratio of calcium to magnesium of 13.5 or higher (a very high ratio).


Both feet in the tunnel of death.  This is the exact same pattern as four lows pattern on a hair mineral test.  It is a very yin pattern and a death pattern in acupuncture.  Read Four Lows on this site for more on this important pattern.


Bowl pattern.  This is the identical terminology in acupuncture and in development science.  It is quite advanced in acupuncture, however, so many acupuncturists are not familiar with it. 

It is a combination, often, of yin deficiency and blood deficiency.  Read The Bowl Pattern on this website for more on this topic.


Coming Alive.  This acupuncture pulse pattern is identical to the name we use.  It is a more yang pattern discussed in some advanced acupuncture texts.  It is a very good sign in both sciences. 


Damp heat.  This common pattern in acupuncture has to do with copper toxicity on a hair mineral test.  In acupuncture texts, damp heat is associated with dysmenorrhea, acne, yeast infections such as candida albicans, female organ problems, liver dysfunction, a yellowish color of the skin, emotional upsets, seizures, and perhaps other conditions that we find associated with copper imbalance.

Copper imbalance tends to affect the spleen meridian.  Usually one has too much copper that is somewhat biounavailable.  This means it is present but in a form or bound up in ways that the body cannot use it properly.  The person is usually in slow oxidation, and it is more common in women than in men.

Damp heat also often has to do with a low Na/K ratio and low female hormones.  It can be associated with amenorrhea (no menstrual periods) in a young woman.

In terms of hair mineral analysis, the person may present with a low Na/K ratio and/or a ‘slow oxidizer on crutches’ hair analysis pattern.  These individuals often need to eat more meat.  Meat has a drying and more yang effect on the body.


Heart fire.  Associated with a sodium/potassium ratiogreater than about 6.


Reaching the top of the hill. This is identical to the hair analysis pattern called the hill.  It is a more yang pattern discussed in some advanced acupuncture texts.  It is an excellent pattern.  For details, read The Hill.


Settling Down.  The identical name is used in acupuncture and modern development programs.  It a more yang pattern and a very good sign, according to advanced acupuncture texts.


The shell.  This is the identical terminology and pattern in both sciences.  In some acupuncture texts, it is called “hunkered down”.  On a hair mineral analysis, it is indicated by a calcium level above about 165 mg% in women and 155 mg% in men.  In acupuncture, it is similarly called a calcium shell and applies mostly to women.  It is a hidden yin in acupuncture, associated with psychological withdrawal, emotional suppression and more.  (see the article The Calcium Shell for more on this important pattern.)


Step Down.  This more yang pattern is called “stepping into life” in some advanced acupuncture texts.


Step Up.  This more yin pattern eventually is called “stepping out of life” in some advanced acupuncture texts.  For more details about the last two patterns, read Step Up/Step Down.


            Yang rising.  This is identical to the three highs or four highs pattern on a hair mineral analysis.  For details, read Four Highs Pattern on this site.


Yin over the top.  This is the same as the pattern in development called sympathetic dominant.  Once again, it is an advanced acupuncture pattern, so many acupuncturists do not know about it.  However, older traditional acupuncturists often know this difficult pattern to overcome.  It is common today.


            Yin deficiency. This may be indicated by a hair sodium/potassium ratio less than about 2.  Please read The Sodium/potassium Ratio on this website for more about this common pattern.  Yin deficiency is also associated with a four lows pattern in all cases, and with a bowl pattern in all cases.

            In acupuncture, symptoms associated with yin deficiency include deficient heat in the body, night sweats (usually due to an infection), feeling hot in the evening with warm feet, a cracked and dry tongue, reduced moisture in the body, and it is associated with older people.

            Similarly, a low sodium/potassium ratio is associated with chronic infections, sodium and fluid loss at times, and it is seen commonly in older people, though it is seen at all ages today.

Interestingly, a product developed by Dr. Paul Eck to correct a low sodium/potassium ratio called Limcomin is similar in some ways to traditional Chinese herbs that are used to balance a yin deficiency.

We believe that the term yin deficiency is actually incorrect.  A low Na/K ratio is actually a type of yang deficiency.


            This is an introduction to the similarities between hair mineral test patterns and acupuncture patterns.  Many other acupuncture patterns can be identified from a properly performed and correctly interpreted hair tissue mineral analysis.  In fact, we believe all the acupuncture patterns can be identified from a hair mineral test if one reads enough minerals.

            Here are a few basic hair analysis patterns that relate to the condition of particular acupuncture meridians:


Š           Liver/gall bladder: Low meridian energy may be indicated on a hair mineral test by:
            * A hair phosphorus level less than about 13 mg%.
        * A hair calcium level greater than about 100 mg%.
            * A hair copper level above about 5 mg%.
            * A hair manganese level above about 0.04 mg%.
            * A hair iron level above about 2 mg%.
            * Elevated lead, cadmium, copper and mercury appear to be most damaging to the liver/gall bladder meridian, though many toxins can affect it.


Š           Kidney/bladder: A low sodium/potassium ratio indicates kidney meridian weakness.  Low zinc may also indicate kidney weakness, as it can elevate the levels of cadmium, mercury and nickel, although all the toxic metals can be toxic for the kidneys in some forms.


Š           Spleen/pancreas/stomach: An imbalanced calcium/magnesium ratio may relate to this meridian.  The levels of magnesium and chromium, when low, may indicate deficiency or weakness of this meridian.


Š           Lung/large intestine: Elevated hair copper, in particular, may relate to weakness or underactivity of this meridian.  This is extremely common today.  The use of all medical drugs (such as antibiotics), vaccines, toxic chemicals, food toxins, yeasts and parasites contribute to large intestine weakness.  Improper food, poor eating habits, lack of rest and other lifestyle factors also contribute to a weak large intestine meridian in almost everyone.
            This tends to overheat the liver.  One reason for this is that a damaged large intestine produces and accumulates many toxins.  These are absorbed into the portal vein system of arteries, which conduct the toxins from the large intestine and small intestine directly into the liver.


Š           Conception vessel: This meridian runs down the front of the body along the central axis of the body.  It therefore touches many important structures such as the forehead or sixth center, thyroid or fifth center, heart or fourth center, abdomen or third center, below the navel or second center and ends at the perineum or first energy center.  Therefore it is a very important meridian today.
            Hair analysis indicators related to a sluggish thyroid gland may indicate weakness in this meridian.  These include a calcium/potassium ratio greater than 4, and perhaps indicators for hidden or high copper and a mercury level greater than about 0.035 mg%.  Other important thyroid gland indicators on a hair mineral test are the presence of the amigos, and others.


Š           Triple heater:  A low sodium/potassium ratio and possibly a slow oxidation rate indicate some weakness in the triple heater.




            The rest of this article describes some of the ways in which development programs use the above healing modalities and methods to balance the body.

However, to understand and appreciate the following sections, one needs to know that most people’s bodies are yin today, and the problem is getting worse.  We know that some acupuncturists and others do not agree with this perspective, but that is our observation.

The main causes of too much yin today is pollution.  This has been discussed above, to some degree.  It includes ionizing radiation from atomic powerplants, electromagnetic pollution, an enormous amount of toxic metals and chemicals, and a mineral-depleted and often toxic food supply.


So, as we discuss the integration of concepts in development science, please keep in mind the problem of yin in the world today. 




            Here are some development modalities and their relation to acupuncture concepts.  The most important one may be related to the diet.


A fairly yang diet.  Development favors more yang foods such as meats, eggs, whole grains and cooked vegetables, prepared in more yang ways by cooking vegetables thoroughly.

We suggest avoiding yin foods such as all fruit, sweets and sugars.  We also avoid food chemicals, and yin methods of food preparation such as raw food, vegetarian food and most fermented food.  An exception is dairy products, which we find are best eaten raw or only lightly cooked.  However, we limit these to 4 ounces daily because they are all rather yin and not required for development.
            As stated above, the macrobiotic classification of yin and yang foods seems to work better today than the traditional Chinese system of food selection.  Here is more detail on foods and food preparation:
            Organic food is more yang than most commercially-grown and GMO food.  This is due to its higher mineral content and lower pesticide and toxic metal content.
            Proteins such as meats should be cooked, but not overcooked as it denatures the protein too much.  Pasteurized dairy products are not as healthful.  Eggs are best eaten only lightly cooked for the same reasons.  Egg yolks should be runny.  Meats and eggs are among the most yang foods.
            Vegetables: Today there is a great need for the many excellent phytochemicals found in cooked vegetables.  Raw vegetables, such as salads, are too yin to be eaten except occasionally.  Also, we find that no one can absorb enough of the minerals in the vegetables when the vegetables are eaten raw.  The human intestinal tract cannot break down the tough vegetable fibers well enough.
            The preferred method of cooking is pressure-cooking, which makes the food more yang.  Fresh vegetables are more yang, and surprisingly, we find that canned vegetables are second best, not frozen ones.
            We also find that certain vegetables contain more of the chemicals needed for development.  For details, read Food For Daily Use.

Kelp or kombu in Japanese appears to be an excellent vegetable dried in capsules or cooked.  It contains a lot of alginate that absorbs some of the mercury that all products of the sea have.  Other sea vegetables have less alginates, so we don’t recommend them.
            Yin and yang vegetables: For details, read Food For Daily Use.  The Nightshade family of vegetables (white potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant) are much more yin, somewhat toxic, and best avoided.

Also, avoid vegetables that have seeds because they are really fruits.  These include cucumbers, okra, peppers, tomatoes and a few others.  Squash is a fruit, but a little winter squash occasionally is okay.


Proteins are more yin, but needed for slow oxidizers more than for fast oxidizers because they have a yangizing effect on protein synthesis and tend to support liver/gall bladder activity.  For details, read Food For Daily Use.              Chicken and turkey are good for most people.  Fish are nourishing foods, but much too high in mercury for general consumption at all.  The exception is sardines, a wonderful food today.  Other edible small fish are herring, anchovies, smelt and perhaps a few others.  However, eat only three or four cans weekly because they still contain some mercury and other toxic metals.  Salmon used to be okay, but no more.  It is too high in mercury today. 

All shellfish and seafood (lobster, clams, oysters, eel, octopus, shrimp, scallops, crabs and others) are too toxic with heavy metals and should all be avoided.  Shellfish tend to be more yin.  Beans or legumes are quite yin and starchy, and should only be eaten a few times weekly unless one has no other proteins to eat.
            Dairy foods, if raw and fresh, are good as long as one is not allergic to them.  However, do not eat more than a few ounces daily, and preferably less, as they are somewhat toxic for many people as the quality is usually not that good.  However, they can provide bioavailable calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D and other vital nutrients.
            Nuts and seeds are slightly toxic and more yin (they grow up in the air, in most cases, which is more yin).  We love almond butter for development – 2 tablespoons daily and 1 tablespoon daily of sesame tahini.  Otherwise, we don’t need or recommend nuts and seeds until a person is somewhat developed.

Algae such as spirulina, chlorella, blue-green algae and others contain many nutrients.  However, we find that algae products are less compatible with human physiology today and cause a little toxicity.  They are also quite yin.

Fats and oils are more yin, but important foods.  Slow oxidizers who are quite yin do less well on them.  Fast oxidizers, who tend to be more yang, can handle and require more of them.  They tend to cool down the metabolic rate and yang condition of the body.
            A few people with a fast oxidation rate cannot eat much fat.  These individuals are usually quite ill.  In these cases, the hair analysis must be studied carefully to look for telltale signs of underlying slow oxidation (always the case in those over age about 12 or 13.  These hints of slow include a zinc level greater than about 13 mg%, a low phosphorus level, a low sodium/potassium ratio, or other imbalances such as high levels of the three amigos (iron, manganese or aluminum) or other toxic metals.
            Avoid most coconut oil, palm oil and avocado because these foods grow in sub-tropical regions and this causes them to be more yin.  A little bit is okay, but that is all.

Animal fats are much more yang such as beef tallow, lamb fat, and chicken fat.  Butter, cream and milk are somewhat yang.  Lard is a pig product, and more toxic than the others and should be avoided.  All pig products may be infected with trichina and other parasite cysts, even when well-cooked, in our experience.

Simple carbohydrates or sugars are extremely yin.  For this reason, we tend to avoid all of them, including fruits, and all sweet foods.  They are simply not helpful for overall health, no matter what they contain or how delicious they taste.  I am sorry about this, but it is our consistent experience with fruit.

Complex carbohydrates or starches.  Some is helpful, but not as much as most people eat.  We suggest avoiding all wheat and spelt, and we want everyone to eat blue corn, a special food for development.




Water is fairlyyin, but very needed for life today.  Ideally, use spring water for daily drinking purposes.  Well water is often contaminated, so it may not be best.  The next best drinking water is often carbon-only filtered tap water.  It is contaminated in all cases, but may not be too bad in some areas.

Distilled and reverse osmosis water, and all alkaline waters are the most yin waters and generally to be avoided.  Distilled and RO are yin because they are devoid of minerals, although they have a somewhat acid pH.  We sometimes recommend distilled water, but only for about 3 months in most cases to remove certain toxins from the body.
            Alkaline waters are very yin and will unbalance the body eventually.  Please avoid them, even though they will cause symptomatic improvements in the body when the body is very acid, and are okay for a month or two.  WE are not sure why they are so yin.  It may have to do with the way they are produced, although alkaline anything tends to be more yin.  Acid products are somewhat more yang.
            Spring water is somewhat alkaline, and usually is the best overall long-term drinking water.  If one does not wish to buy the plastic bottles of it, go to to locate a spring nearby where you can usually obtain it free.  However, we find the plastic bottles, even with BPA, is okay and does not build up in the liver or elsewhere.
            Distilled water can be used for a day or two during a healing reaction to remove some toxins faster.  However, do not drink distilled water long-term, as it will leach vital minerals from the body and it is too yin.
            Do not drink reverse osmosis water, as it does not hydrate the body well.  It is also extremely yin.  It is sold in machines, supermarkets and health food stores as “purified water”, “drinking water”, Dasani water, Agua Fina and many others.
            Too much bathing is also yin and to be avoided.  Shower every other day, if possible.  Even living by the ocean or lakes is quite yin.  For more on water, read Water For Drinking and Hydration on this website.


Rest and sleep: The reclining position is yin, but more rest is absolutely needed by most people, so it cannot be reduced or skipped.  Go to bed early.  This is the more yang time of the night and very critical for rebuilding the body.  Read more about this in the article on this website entitled Rest and Sleep.


Radiation is the ultimate yin toxin!  Avoid it as much as possible.  This means limiting all x-rays as much as possible.  It also means limiting air travel, as it exposes a person to some extra radiation at high altitudes and at airport x-ray machinery.


Most travel is quite yin and toxic in other ways as well, such as pesticides in hotel rooms, breathing stale and contaminated air in planes, trains, buses, etc., eating improperly prepared foods laced with chemicals, and for other reasons, too.  Car travel is usually the best.


Most medical drugs, over-the-counter drugs, recreational drugs and alcohol are very yin.


Sugar and even most fruits are extremely yin and in fact toxic today, we find, for many people.  All feed yeast in the yin bodies and upset the blood sugar, which is already out of balance.  Do your best to avoid all sweeteners in all foods and beverages.  Also, avoid most fruits and all fruit juices, even diluted, as they are extremely yin and often sprayed with pesticides today, even those labeled organic.


Chemical food preservatives, flavors, colors and hundreds of other additives are generally very yin.  For this reason, avoid most processed and prepared food items.  This means you must cook at home and eat out sparingly.  When eating out, choose ethnic or smaller restaurants where food is prepared fresh, and generally avoid chain restaurants, as they usually use many more prepared and chemical-laden foods.


Table salt is quite yin and toxic.  Use sea salt, a decent food that can enhance your diet.  Do not drink water with salt in it, however.  Cook with salt as this has a yangizing effect.  Often, however, it is best to add the sea salt when cooking is done.




Mineral therapy is among the more yang supplemental nutrient therapies, though all supplements tend to be quite yin.  This may be why it works so well today.  It is most helpful for all the meridians, when recommended properly.  This is not easy to do, however, but Dr. Paul Eck discovered many secrets of how to do it properly.  We use mainly chelated minerals, as most other types are even more yin and therefore not as helpful.

Mineral supplements act as placeholders.  This is a very unique and important concept.  To read about it, read Placeholders on this site.

Be especially careful with iron supplements.  These are quite irritating and we find that almost everyone has plenty of iron from eating meats, eggs and white flour products.  Vegetarians and women with very heavy periods occasionally need iron, however.

Please avoid “natural” minerals from the earth or the sea, as these are usually contaminated with toxic metals, no matter what the company claims.  As a rule, stay away from mineral supplements, except for kelp and one called Endo-veggie, which is a vegetable capsule.  Instead, use a good sea salt, kelp, and Veg-easy to provide your minerals, along with a diet of about 70% or more cooked vegetables.   This will give you enough minerals.


Glandular extracts: This is an important aspect of a development program.  Glandulars are the most yang type of nutritional supplements, and this may be one reason why they are so helpful.  They also provide many subtle nutrients the body needs and they seem to strengthen particular organs, glands and meridians in unusual ways.
            We use only freeze-dried glandulars.  The salt extracted glandulars such as those from Standard Process are okay, though not superior, as some claim.  Do not take more glandulars than are recommended for you, however, as they can be toxic today.


Vitamin therapy: Most vitamins are good for the liver/gall bladder meridian that is weak in most people.  Most synthetic vitamins, in particular, and all vitamins are somewhat yin, so we do not use any more than are absolutely required.
            Vitamin C.  Many people take too much.  Vitamin C is extremely yin.  It is beneficial, but the amount needed is small.  It is not true that a food-based vitamin C is more effective, in our experience, nor is it better absorbed.


Amino acids, enzymes and specialty products: These can be very helpful, at times.  We use a powerful digestive aid, GB-3, for everyone.  It contains ox bile, pancreatin and dehyrocholic acid, a bile acid.  This is a very yang supplement compared to other digestive aids and other liver support supplements, which is why I much prefer it over all other digestive aids.


Vegetable enzymes. These are derived from fungi, so they are much more yin.  The product label usually calls them names such as protease, amylase, lipase and others.  These are far more yin and hard on the liver, in our experience.  They also appear to be somewhat toxic if taken for a few months or more, which does not happen so far with pancreatin and ox bile.  This could be because they are so yin.

Isolated amino acids are all very yin.  Then can be helpful and we use a few such as taurine, cysteine and methionine.  These are more yang and contain sulfur, a yang mineral many people require more of.  We do not like yin forms of sulfur as much, such as MSM or methylsulfonylmethane.  This product may give symptom relief, but will eventually make the body more yin, which is disastrous for some people.


Herbs. Herbs are powerful medicines, but many are very yin and most contain some toxic substances, in our experience.  We hope this can be corrected, someday, but for now we do not recommend most herbs.  Chinese and Indian or Ayurvedic herbs are particularly toxic.  This was not the case 1000 years ago and before that, but the planet is now more polluted than ever.  For this reason, we avoid almost all of these herbs.
            Herbs often function as remedies.  Development is not about remedies, but rather about balancing the body gently and delicately, which causes most symptoms to go away.  Please exercise great caution with all herbs, no matter what anyone claims about them.

As a general rule, do not stay on herbs for more than a week or two.  Extended use of most is not needed, and if it is needed, then one is not getting to the source of the problem.  Mild herbal teas are fine, however, such as chamomile and hibiscus teas.




Coffee enemas:  Coffee is a more yang herb, although it grows in the tropics.  It grows at high altitudes, on mountain sides, which is much more yang.  Coffee enemas appear to be excellent and sometimes absolutely needed for the liver/gall bladder meridian and to detoxify the liver and the large intestine.

Colonic irrigation by a professional is much more yin, so it is less recommended, though it is great to clean out the colon when one starts a development program, for example.  These are very underrated therapies and could save millions of lives if more people did them regularly.


Sauna therapy with a near infrared lamp sauna only: This is a hot, dry, reddish therapy.  It is thus more yang.  It is also an excellent, powerful, comfortable, quite safe and a very effective therapy for almost everyone today.  It is somewhat similar to burning moxa, but safer and easier in most cases.  It appears to be very good for the spleen/pancreas meridian and to detoxify the skin and the entire body.  Other subtle benefits may include adding yang energy to the body via the infrared lamps.


Relaxation and rest. As explained earlier, this is yin, but absolutely needed today.  It calms down the liver energy, caused by too much iron and other toxins in the liver such as copper.


The Pulling Down Exercise: This is a very yang mental practice as it moves energy downward through the body, and this is very yang.  This concept of yin and yang meditations is critical today.  The pushing down exercise is about “emptying the mind”, rather than “expanding” the mind with mantras, thoughts, visualizations or images of any kind. 

This is a critical distinction between this exercise and most others.  It is the most yang meditation I am aware of, so far.  For details, read the Pulling Down Exercise.


Studying or mental efforting.  This is also yang if done correctly.  The kind of material to study must be grounded and scientific.  The Bible also works well, perhaps because it is a true story and historic information.

What does not work are cheap novels, and other fiction unless perhaps if it is very scientific in nature.  Most so-called “new age” or even most Eastern spiritual reading is not as good.  Such material is too often too ungrounded to be helpful.  It may be “mind expanding”, but not yang enough, as far as we can tell.

Political reading and study may be okay if it is Austrian economics, or free market and capitalist-oriented.  This is a science of human behavior and nothing more.  Socialist and communist material is bad because these are yin and harmful philosophies that are also not true.




More yin patterns.  Four lows pattern, three lows pattern, bowl pattern, poor eliminator patterns, sympathetic dominance pattern, and double low ratio pattern are more yin.


More yang patterns.  The hill pattern, coming alive pattern, settling down pattern, step down pattern, and a few others are more yang.  The double patterns involving these are also usually more yang, such as the double hill, double coming alive, and double settling down patterns.  Double patterns involve the first four minerals on the chart (calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium) and the second four (iron, copper, manganese and zinc).  For details, read The Second Four Minerals.
