Certain hair analysis patterns have been found to be doubles, meaning that they involve two ratios or two patterns.  They often involve ways in which two patterns reinforce or emphasize each other, and they may be called emphasis patterns for this reason.  Many are extremely important such as the oxidation types, sympathetic dominance and the bowl pattern.  Some of them can be reinforced by other patterns, making them triple or quadruple patterns as well.

An important reason for this article is to introduce a way to appreciate the fractal nature of the human body and even the brain.  The concept of doubling and tripling a pattern relates directly to the idea of fractal chemistry and a fractal design.

Fractals are patterns composed of simple numbers that repeat over and over to create very complex arrays or structures.

In this case, the fact of repeating mineral patterns on a hair mineral analysis can offer clues about the design of the human body as a fractal system in which repeating simple number patterns combine to form far more complex ones.

Fractal designs are extremely common and easily visible in plants, such as in the arrangement of the leaves or in the design of a flower.  However, this kind of design is harder to see in a human being.  Hair mineral analysis interpretation is one way to learn about how fractal theory – the idea of repeating simple numerical patterns – is used in our bodies everywhere.

Below are some of the most important doubling patterns I am aware of at this time.  More may be identified in the future.

THE AMIGOS (IRON, MANGANESE, ALUMINUM, CHROMIUM, SELENIUM, NICKEL AND BORON)

The concept here is that if a hair analysis reveals an elevated level of any of what we call the amigos, then most likely a person has all, or at least more of them.  If more of these are elevated, it may be considered a double or triple amigo pattern.  The more severe the elevation of one or more of them, the more severe the effects, in general, and this, also, may be considered as a doubling and tripling concept.  However, all that is required to say that one has elevated levels of the amigos is to have one of them elevated above the ideal value.  Aluminum is the most common of these, though not always.

The word amigos means friends in Spanish.  The idea is that these minerals are like friends who stick together and appear to accumulate together in the body in a particular form.

The importance of the amigos is that they tend to form oxides that stimulate the adrenal glands and raise the sodium level.  They do this by causing oxidant damage resulting in inflammation.  This can be responsible for hundreds of symptoms from joint pain and headaches to more serious inflammatory conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and others.  They are very common.

Nutritional balancing programs are one of the few ways I know of to remove them easily, safely, inexpensively and painlessly from the body.  Chelation will not remove them well, and nor will most other methods of nutritional or medical therapy.

They tend to reinforce each other because the more of them that are present, the more oxidant damage is usually going on in the body.

On rare occasions, other minerals may act as irritants, oxidants or amigos as well.  These include copper, most importantly.  However, it is possible that magnesium, for example, could form an oxide as well.

For more information about this interesting pattern, read Iron, Manganese And Aluminum on this website.

INFECTIONS

A single infection pattern is a sodium/potassium less than 2.5.  Another indicator may be a calcium/magnesium ratio less than about 3, if found with a low sodium/potassium ratio.  A third indicator that emphasizes the pattern may be a sodium/potassium ratio is less than about 1.  Another indicator may be a zinc level less than about 10.  Still another indicator of infection may be the presence of high cadmium – a level above 0.01 mg%.

In this way, one can identify double, triple or even quadruple chronic infection indicators or emphasis indicators on a hair mineral analysis.

FAST AND SLOW OXIDATION RATES

Dr. Paul Eck identified several oxidation types and oxidation rates based upon two mineral ratios in the hair, provided that the hair is not washed at the laboratory.  These ratios are the calcium/potassium ratio and the sodium/magnesium ratio.  The use of two ratios means that fast and slow oxidation are themselves a double type of phenomena, according to Dr. Eck.  In contrast, other researchers consider only one ratio to determine the oxidation type.  For more about this topic, read Fast, Slow and Mixed Oxidation on this website.

In addition, emphasis indicators for the oxidation types occur when the oxidation rate is not only slow, for example, but it is very slow.  This is a kind of doubling concept.  So we can speak of mild, moderate or extremely fast or slow oxidation.

Another metabolic type that Dr. Eck identified is the four lows pattern.  This may have been called sub-oxidation by Dr. George Watson, who originated the oxidation type concept.  In this case, the doubling or emphasis idea applies when the four macrominerals or electrolytes that form the pattern are not only low, but very low.  Read Four Lows for more on this interesting pattern.

THE CALCIUM SHELL

This is a common hair analysis pattern defined as a hair tissue calcium level above about 165-170 mg%.  However, we have observed that when the calcium level rises further, one may identify the pattern as a double, triple, or quadruple shell pattern.  Once again, these are emphasis concepts and as the calcium level becomes even higher, it seems to emphasize or reinforce the meaning of the pattern, which has to do with psychological withdrawal to a degree, being out of touch with reality, ÒhidingÓ and more.  Sometimes, the pattern is even a quintuple or sextuple pattern.  This is quite an interesting observation and correlates well with symptoms in many cases.  For more details, read The Calcium Shell.

SYMPATHETIC DOMINANCE PATTERN

This is a very common and important pattern seen on hair mineral analyses.  It indicates a person who pushes himself or herself, overusing the sympathetic or fight-or-flight nervous system.  It is a very common tendency today.

Dr. David Watts uses the same words for to describe a fast oxidizer, so this may be confusing for those who have read his work.  We use the term a sympathetic state of body chemistry to describe a fast oxidizer, whereas sympathetic dominance is simply a mental tendency, usually found in slow oxidizers, to keep pushing as though one were in fast oxidation and had the energy to do so, although usually the energy is no longer available.

The primary indicator is a potassium level of 4 mg% or less, provided the laboratory does not wash the hair at the lab.  Only two labs do not wash the hair in America, Analytical Research Laboratories and Trace Elements, Inc.  The latter, however, does not recognize or use most of the patterns in this article.  I would avoid this laboratory completely at this time, as they are not as careful, their graph is difficult to read, their products are not as good, and their corrective programs are terrible.

Sympathetic dominance has also been found to be identified with other indicators that double, triple or quadruple the effect of the pattern.  These include a potassium level of 1 or 2 mg%, a sodium/potassium ratio greater than about 5, a calcium/magnesium ratio greater than about 9.5 if found along with a high sodium/potassium ratio, and a four lows pattern.  Also, a four highs pattern with a sodium/potassium ratio above 2.5 is another indicator for sympathetic dominance pattern.

If a person has more than one of these patterns present on a test, we refer to the situation as a double, triple or even quadruple sympathetic dominance pattern.  Once again, the intensity of the pattern in terms of how many of the above indicators are present seems to correlate well with symptoms in most cases.  For more information, read Sympathetic Dominance on this website.

THE BOWL PATTERN

This is another very common pattern seen on hair tests when the hair has not been washed at the laboratory.  It is defined as a calcium/magnesium ratio greater than about 9.5 and a sodium/potassium ratio less than 2.5.  A bowl pattern generally means a person is feeling stuck to a degree.  It is also perhaps better defined as a yin deficiency pattern.  This is an acupuncture term that indicates an energy deficiency.  We find it is usually due to a simple nutritional deficiency state that goes away easily when the nutrition is improved by eating a lot more cooked vegetables, animal protein daily, and taking a powerful digestive aid.

In the case of this pattern, if the ratios are more extreme, the pattern may be referred to as double or even triple.  Sometimes it is just called a deep bowl, an extreme bowl, or a drastic bowl depending upon how imbalanced are the ratios above.  To read more about this, read The Bowl Pattern on this website.

THE HILL

The hill pattern is the opposite of the bowl pattern.  Once again, it is defined by two ratios, a calcium/magnesium ratio less than about 3 and a sodium/potassium ratio greater than about 5.  A doubling effect occurs here, and the more extreme the ratios, the more important the pattern, it appears.

The hill is a celebration, an openness, a turning of a corner pattern.  It might also be called a karmic release pattern, in that a person is able to move on and get past something that was holding him or her back.  For details, read The Hill Pattern.

BURNOUT PATTERNS

Adrenal burnout or exhaustion is another extremely common pattern seen on hair mineral analyses.  Indicators for this trend or tendency include a sluggish oxidation rate, a very slow oxidation rate, a sodium/potassium ratio less than 2.5, a four lows pattern and perhaps a calcium shell pattern as well.  All of these can also be of varying severity or intensity.

When more than one of these indicators are revealed, or if an indicator is very severe, we may refer to the situation as double burnout, triple burnout or even quadruple burnout.  For more information, read Adrenal Burnout Syndrome on this website.

DOUBLE HIGH RATIO PATTERNS

These refer to patterns in which the calcium/magnesium ratio is above about 9.5 and the sodium/potassium ratio is greater than about 5.  Double high ratio patterns tends to reinforce the symptomatology and pathology associated with a high sodium/potassium ratio such as inflammation, acute stress, and anger.

In addition to a simple Double high ratio pattern, two interesting variant patterns are called Step Down Pattern and the Hard Driver Pattern.  Another variant described in the 2010 edition of Nutritional Balancing And Hair Mineral Analysis is called Trying Hard To Stay Afloat.  It is another double pattern consisting of a double high ratio pattern in conjunction with a sympathetic dominance pattern.

DOUBLE LOW RATIO PATTERNS

These refer to patterns in which the calcium/magnesium ratio is below about 3 and the sodium/potassium ratio is below 2.5.  Double low ratio patterns tends to reinforce the symptomatology and pathology associated with a low sodium/potassium ratio such as fatigue, adrenal exhaustion, blood sugar disturbance or diabetes, protein catabolism or tissue breakdown, malignancy, chronic infections, and liver, kidney and cardiovascular stress.

In addition to a simple Double low ratio pattern, an interesting variant pattern is called the Step Up Pattern.

POOR ELIMINATOR PATTERN

With certain minerals and all of the toxic metals, a very low level is not an indicator or a deficiency.  Instead, it almost always indicates that a person cannot eliminate a toxic form of the mineral.  This is called a poor eliminator pattern.

This pattern may be a double, triple, quadruple or more when more than one mineral is involved.  The more minerals that show a poor eliminator pattern, generally the worse the elimination.

For details, read Poor Eliminator Pattern.  For the specific levels of minerals that indicate a poor eliminator pattern, read Mineral Ideals, Ranges, Toxicity and Poor Eliminators.
