This is a theme of this website and a most important idea.

The reason is that in order to overcome or transcend any problem of any kind, in the body or elsewhere, one must first allow and embrace the problem.  This is the loving approach to solving problems of all kinds.

This does not mean that you will be stuck with the problem or condition forever, as some believe.  In fact, this is the only way “through” the issue.

An example. Once during a painful body work session the practitioner explained to me that when he digs his elbow into my back, I should not fight the pain. Instead I should attempt to allow and embrace the pain. In this way, I would transcend it. I began to do this and it worked.

The opposite approach.  Often, people think that by rejecting parts of themselves or their life that they don’t like, that these rejected aspects or incidents will go away. This is a common approach that one might call denial.

Denial can seem to work, at least for a while. However, the problem really has not gone away. It is just buried or suppressed. What can occur is that one will have flashbacks or episodes when the problem suddenly surfaces again. This is called PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Also, as long as the problem remains inside, one will not function optimally. One may have fears, phobias or other psychological or physical symptoms.

Another problem with suppression is a spiritual principle that whatever one denies, one projects. This is a somewhat more advanced topic, but an important one.

Projection occurs when one denies an aspect of oneself. Projection causes more problems because others will pick up our rejected thoughts such as violence and hatred. Weaker souls can then act out the denied aspect, and this is often ugly or nasty.

A method that can be used for denial, but also has other uses, is called positive thinking. It is to substitute healthier and more loving thoughts and feelings for negative ones.

This is an aspect of “only love heals”. It is not necessarily just suppression and it is worth discussing.

Positive thinking can be abused if one just denies the truth using affirmations or prayers. However, there are times for what might be called pure substitution. This is when one is so deeply caught in negative thinking that one can hardly function.

In these cases, one simply attempts to balance negative thinking with thoughts that are more positive, even if they are not the truth. The pulling Down Procedure helps one do this more easily.

However, positive affirmations and prayers have another value. They teach another spiritual principle – that loving thoughts are real. This is a lesson many people need to learn. For more details, read The Real Self or Only Love Heals.

Positive thinking has another value. It will bring up within you anything that is not in agreement with the prayer or affirmation you are saying and repeating.

That is, repeating prayers can cause something called cognitive dissonance that can help one see one's negative thinking. Otherwise, often one's negative thoughts are hidden from view and difficult to see. For more details, read Prayer.

In short, to everything.  This is a key.  If you have a weak stomach or liver, allow it, be with it and embrace it.

If you feel sad, allow it, rather than fight it all the time.  If you are shy or awkward around people or if you don’t think too well, allow it and embrace it.  This just means let it get close to you.  Do not fear these things, although that is an understandable response.

This is how one can really love the self, a related theme.  Otherwise, one rejects parts of oneself, and it is like rejecting one of your hands or one of your feet.  It cripples you and interferes with all aspects of your life.
