INTRODUCTION

We added nutritional yeast to all development programs starting in January of 2020. It is a special yeast grown specifically for nutritional purposes. It is not the same as baker’s yeast or brewer’s yeast, which we do not recommend.

Yin. Nutritional yeast is somewhat cold or yin in macrobiotic terminology because all yeast products are yin. However, in small amounts we find it very helpful for development.

BENEFITS

Nutritional yeast is an excellent source of:

B-complex vitamins, including vitamin B12. If it is fortified, it contains somewhat more B-complex vitamins.

Trace Minerals. It contains good compounds of zinc, manganese, molybdenum, chromium and selenium. These are vital minerals that everyone requires today.

Protein. It contains fairly complete protein, meaning a wide variety of amino acids.

Carbohydrates. Nutritional yeast contains alpha-mannan and beta glucan. These can help boost the immune response. In addition, beta glucan has been shown to help lower elevated cholesterol.

Anti-oxidants. It contains some glutathione, selenomethionine and other anti-oxidants. These help protect the cells from oxidant damage.

USING NUTRITIONAL YEAST

Taste. Most clients say that nutritional yeast does not taste bad.

Which Brands. Most brands are fine. At this time, we most recommend Frontier Natural Foods, KAL, Thompson, Blue Bonnet,, Anthony’s, Lewis Labs, Whole Foods, and Bob’s Red Mill brands of nutritional yeast.

Fortification. Some nutritional yeast is fortified with extra synthetic B-complex vitamins. At this time, we do not think this is needed. However, it is okay.

Dosage. For adults, the dosage is one teaspoon daily. Children, starting at age 3, also need some, depending upon their size and weight.

How to take it. The easiest way is to sprinkle it over your food. It can also be used as a thickener. It has a slightly cheesy flavor that most people find acceptable. We do not recommend cooking it with your food.

Storage. Keep in a cool place and keep it tightly closed. It can be stored for up to a year this way.

Cautions. So far, we have not had any reports of adverse reactions from taking a small amount of nutritional yeast every day.
