DEFINITION
The basic concept of American conservative thinking is political and economic liberty of the citizens within a framework of simple, clear laws to protect everyone's rights and property. These laws are based upon the Ten Commandments given to Moses: One must not lie, must not steal and must not rape or murder others.
Conservative thought is a perspective on politics, especially American politics, that is essentially the thinking of the founders of America. America was the first modern nation based upon these principles. Some of the ideas have spread to other nations and brought prosperity and peace to many nations.
TYPES OF CONSERVATIVES
There are several kinds of conservative people. Some are social conservatives. This generally means they support Biblical values in the social realm. For example, they want marriage to be between one man and one woman. They also do not want mothers to have a “right” to kill their babies if they so choose. Once life has begun, they say the babies have rights and they must be recognized and supported by good laws.
Other people are fiscal conservatives. They emphasize efficient government, no government debt, no government deficits, and little to no welfare state because it is prohibited by the US Constitution.
For example, they oppose Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security (retirement welfare) and hundreds of other government welfare programs. These are all illegal according to the Constitution.
According to the Constitution, welfare, along with education, housing, communication, transportation, medical research and more are to be handled by the private sector. This would keep the government small, efficient, and saves trillions of dollars each year.
Others are political conservatives. They oppose large, bloated government and want a return to constitutional rule.
Attacks. Today conservative thinking is under severe attack by the alien group some call the thugs, rogues or satans. They don't like it and they work hard to destroy it. They favor its opposite – political and economic slavery, also called communism, socialism, dictatorship or authoritarian government.
WORDS
Classical liberalism. The original name for American conservative ideas was classical liberal thought. However, the words have been taken over by the criminals, so it is best not to use this term.
Libertarian. Libertarian is another word related to conservative thinking in America. Libertarians and conservatives are concerned with liberty, which is the ability to act as you wish provided you allow others to do the same.
However, conservative thought includes many ideas and principles from the Bible. These were very important to the founders of America. Today's libertarians do not always include these principles.
The main conservative idea is the importance, rights and sovereignty of the Citizens, not the government or the leaders. However, the entire nation exists within the framework of Biblical principles. These were expressed at the time of the founding of the American nation as the common law of Great Britain. This is the legal system the founders chose to adopt for America.
In conservative thought, the government exists to serve the people, not to rule over the people. The people delegate some authority to the government, and that is all. In conservative thought, there is only one set of simple laws for everyone to follow. No one is superior or above the law.
POLITICAL PARTIES AND CONSERVATIVE THOUGHT
Political parties are organizations set up to find, fund and support candidates to run for government office. Political parties differ in their ideology and thinking about the nature of government and its purposes.
America has two major political parties:
The Republican Party is the American political party most associated with conservative thought. However, today many of its members are not that conservative. It was started by president Abraham Lincoln around 1860.
The other major American political party is the Democratic Party. It was formerly somewhat interested in conservative political thought because America was founded on these principles. However, in the past 50 or 60 years this political party has been taken over by communists and socialists and it no longer believes in conservative thought.
European Conservative Political Parties. These are political parties found in a number of European nations. They are not as conservative as the American Republican Party. However, they are somewhat similar because they favor free markets and smaller government.
II. CONSERVATIVE IDEAS
IN THE POLITICAL REALM
- Small government
- Limited government power
- Self-government
- Follow the constitution. For example, no executive orders and no emergency powers.
- Government exists mainly to protect individual rights, not for welfare, education, health and other areas that are not authorized in the constitution.
- Balance the budget and no national debt except in an emergency such as a war, and then pay it off quickly.
- The importance of privacy (the Fourth Amendment to the US Constitution).
- Strict separation of powers. This means different people 1) make the laws (the legislative branch), 2) enforce the laws (the executive branch), and 3) judge the laws (the judicial branch). Today these are mixed together, especially in the government agencies that do all three of these. This is strictly illegal.
- Importance of Biblical principles.
IN THE ECONOMIC REALM
- Conservatives believe in economic liberty. Other names for this system are free market economics, capitalism or laissez faire.
This is an economic system controlled mainly by the Citizens, not the government. The government sets basic laws against fraud, misrepresentation and negligence to protect the people. However, most all economic decisions are made by individuals on a voluntary basis.
Businesses are free to produce the goods they want, in the quantity they want, and to advertise them, and to set the prices for the goods. This is by far the best economic system and it has brought prosperity to many nations on earth.
America was and is a leader in this economic system. However, free market has been severely curtailed in America over the past 100 years by excessive government regulation. This has harmed America and the world.
The opposite of free market economics. This is called command and control economics or socialism. In this system, which does not work well, the government owns or at least controls the economic system. The government makes most economic decisions such as what goods will be produced, the prices of the goods, and how much will be produced. The citizens have many fewer choices about what to buy.
IN THE SOCIAL REALM
Conservatives support traditional marriage, traditional child-raising, and oppose homosexual marriage and killing babies.
III. THE SITUATION TODAY
There are few real conservatives left in America. Over the past 125 years, the American national government has grown extremely large and is deeply in debt. Most Congressmen and most of the presidents have done nothing about it but make it worse. The Congress passes bad laws and the executive branch – the president – does not enforce basic laws.
Some leaders, including Mr. Trump, claim to be conservatives, but they are not. They favor big government, they allow a huge national debt. Even worse, this president now wants people to vote to allow the debt to become much worse in the “big bill”. The bill includes a provision to raise the debt ceiling (how much the nation can go into debt) by $5 trillion dollars! This is not at all conservative.
The same is true of so-called right wing AM talk radio. Most of the commentators claim to be conservatives, but they are not. They follow Mr. Trump, and not the constitution or conservative values. From our perspective, they are fake conservatives.
THE OPPOSITE OF CONSERVATIVE THOUGHT
To understand something, it is often helpful to understand its opposite. The opposite of conservative thought we call criminal. Others call it liberal, communist, socialist, authoritarian, totalitarian, dictatorship or monarchy. It may also be called slavery.
There are some minor differences between these types of governments. However, basically they are all the same – criminality.
Criminality is the rule of a few over the rule of the many. Some say it is the rule of men, not the rule of law. The leaders so as they wish and the citizens must obey. There is little liberty and government power is unlimited.
Even parliamentary democracy or social democracy found in Europe today is not conservative. The national government is very large and government power is not limited.
