I. INTRODUCTION

DEFINITION

This article concerns what or whom people put first in their lives. This is a most important subject because it shapes one's life.

According to the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai, one should put God first in one's life. However, most people do not do this. They put other things or other people first.

WHY IS THIS OF CRITICAL IMPORTANCE?

The reason is that planet earth is loaded with witchcraft. This means improper mental influencing. The thugs, rogues or satans do it all the time. However, so so advertisers, sexual predators, and all selfish people.

Parents do it to their children. Children do it to their parents. And so on.

They use their mind to influence you against your will. They generally do it secretly. Some people can feel it, but most people can't even feel it. But it works.

Focusing on God first is the only remedy!

THE FIRST TWO COMMANDMENTS

The First Commandment says “I am the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me.”

The Second Commandment, I am told, may not be translated correctly. However, it states “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below”.

II. POPULAR “GODS” THAT PEOPLE PUT FIRST IN THEIR LIFE

1. PHYSICAL LEVEL

A common “god” that people “worship” is money. Money is important but for many people it takes on a meaning and importance that it does not deserve. It is a means of exchange and that is all. Many people, rich and poor, think it is a measure of their worth, or a toy they play with, or a way to impress their friends, or something else.

Other common physical objects that people make too important in their lives are their cell phone, computer, house, car, clothing, their hair or some other aspect of the body such as its appearance, music, furniture, or locations such as their favorite street, mountain, forest or beach.

Some people also “worship” poverty or physical lack. They worry about it continuously and may deliberately deprive themselves of basic necessities, thinking this is holy or spiritual behavior. It is no such thing.

The the human body is the temple of the living God and one needs to take proper care of it.

2. EMOTIONAL LEVEL

Many people “worship” pleasure, happiness, thrills, or sexual excitement. Once again, there is nothing wrong with happiness and joy. However, they are to be kept secondary to worshipping or placing God first.

Some people also “worship” anger guilt or fear. This is not only destructive. It is incorrect. These emotions arise in everyone. However, one is not supposed to focus upon them.

3. EGO LEVEL

Many people “worship” their own mind, with its desires, likes and dislikes, or preferences. This is the ego life.

Many people think this is the correct way to live. If one wants something, one works for it or at least dreams about it all day.

If one does not want something, one runs away from it or distracts oneself by focusing on their friends or something else. This is how most people live today.

This is also incorrect according to the Commandments given to Moses. Physical and other desires and preferences are normal. However, they should take second place in one's life.

As one matures, one needs to put aside many desires and “likes” that are somewhat immature and really are silly and just waste time. A few of them are very destructive of oneself or others such as the desire for drugs, alcohol, too much sex, or harming others for pleasure such as rape and seduction.

Some of these ego “needs” (really desires) are very common today. Many people carry around a cell phone and want to “keep in touch” with friends, family, the weather, or something else all day long. They want text messages if anything arises with their friends and they want them now. These are not good desires and letting them go in favor of living in a way that puts God first is much, much better.

4. SOCIAL

This is a very popular “god”. Many people put other people first in their lives and “go with friends or family”. There is nothing wrong with family or friends, but it is not correct to put them first.

Putting God before family and friends is one of the most difficult tasks for most people. If one does not spend time with family or friends, many people feel very lonely. One also may feel selfish, arrogant, self-absorbed, or anti-social.

Parents often teach this to their children, perhapsin a well-meaning way. However, it is still incorrect. God needs to come first, not friends, family, work associates, or “friends” on social media.

5. WORK, OR ONE'S JOB OR CAREER

Many people put work first in their life. They are too proud of their job, position, work responsibilities, appreciation of others for their work, or other aspects of work.

It is true these people make good workers because they think about it a lot. However, it is incorrect in the spiritual sense. God and doing the Will of God needs to come first, before thoughts about one's job or career.

This is not encouraged enough in our modern society. Older societies were better in this regard. Our society focuses on “production” and “accomplishment” and this is good in some ways. For example, it has produced much wealth and less poverty.

However, the people are not as happy or content. Many are frightened they will lose their job or career. Many fear loss of self-esteem if they do not do their job correctly. Being “fired” from a job is a terrible blow for many people.

Many people also do work that is silly, destructive or just a waste of time. They remain in jobs when they know they are just there for the money, or the benefits, or the social life, or the prestige of the position.

Some also know they are lying to people, cheating people, deceiving people or even stealing from others – but it pays well or is “fun” in some other way. Perhaps it is what everyone else seems to do, so it must be alright.

All this is very incorrect!! It actually causes a lot of depression, disease and early death. God must come first, not one's work.

6. MENTAL LEVEL

This is another large area of mistakes. It has to do with what one thinks about all day. Thoughts are very important and they are creative. This means they give birth to action and even to physical objects in one's life.

Thoughts of God need to be first. All other thoughts need to be secondary. However, this is reversed in most people. They think about the first five levels listed in this article most, if not all of their day.

The Bible says one is to spend at least one day focused on thoughts of God, but this is really not enough. One needs to do this every day, and in fact most of the time.

One may answer that this is impractical and silly, and perhaps a waste of time. However, wise people know that if one focuses on God most of the time, one will receive guidance about everything else in life. The result will be that every aspect of one's life will go well. This is the truth and it is a truth that needs to be taught widely and deeply!

7. SPIRITUAL LEVEL

In one sense, this entire article is about the spiritual level of one's life. Focusing on God and not other things is a spiritual level of living.

However, some people believe that the spiritual level means one's religion or other spiritual practices or time in a spiritual group such as a prayer group.

Others believe that the spiritual level means thinking about angels, elves or other invisible beings.

Others believe that the spiritual level means not paying attention to one's body or health and just sort of drifting or dreaming much of the time.

Others think of spiritual as meaning spending time in nature or thinking about animals or plants.

Still other think spiritual means praying all the time for this or that.

This is a difficult area because many people think having a religion or wanting peace or love is the same as focusing on God and His Will. However, it is often not quite the same. We hope to explore this more in the future.

III. AN EXCELLENT COUNSELING METHOD

When I talk with people who are ill or unhappy, I often say to them “I wonder if you are violating the First Commandment/” Most people don't know this commandment, so I tell them what it says. Then I wait while they give it some thought.

Religiously-oriented people usually like this approach very much. They are most grateful that someone is pointing it out.

Secular or anti-religious people are often not interested in this method, but many of them need this reminder anyway.

COUNSELING ONESELF

This counseling method also works extremely well on oneself. I now do it all the time.

I think to myself, “I like this or that, or I don't like this or that, or “I would like to do this or go here”. However, I must stop myself and remind myself that I should be thinking of God and God's Will first, not anything else – not even food, sleep, or anything or anyone.

This can be very scary. What is God wants me dead or sick or alone? However, in another way it is very empowering and loving. I have come to believe that God wants me happy, but I don't necessarily know what that means or looks like.

So don't let fear deter you. Try this counseling method!
