POTASSIUM – TOXIC FORMS

INTRODUCTION

 

This article is a companion to the article entitled Potassium on this website.  As with many elements, not all forms and compounds of potassium are equal in their ability to nourish the body properly.  The less desirable forms of potassium are what I call toxic potassium.

This idea is not well accepted in medicine or nutrition, I realize, but I believe it is true.  A number of other researchers have mentioned it.  Among them are Louis Kervran, William Albrecht and Andre Voisin, from whom I borrowed information for this article.

 

SOURCES OF TOXIC FORMS OF POTASSIUM

 

So far, the sources for toxic potassium include:

 

1. Superphosphate fertilizers. This type of fertilizer, also called N-P-K, contain a toxic form of potassium.  It is a major source of toxic potassium in many foods.

This type of fertilizer is used on almost all crops, and on both commercial and organically grown crops.  This means you cannot escape it by eating organically grown food.

 

2. Fruit.  For some reason, fruit absorbs more toxic potassium than any other food.  The potassium is incorporated into the fruit and cannot be washed off.

It does not matter if the fruit is pesticide-free, organic, non-hybridized or heirloom varieties.  This is one of the sad facts about almost all fruit today, and a major reason I do not recommend eating any of it today.  Read Superphosphate Fertilizers for more details on this horror.

People who have eaten a lot of fruit often show a high potassium on a first or a retest hair analysis.  It is part of a hair analysis pattern called Beam Me Up, Scottie pattern, and includes a high potassium level.

 

3. Some vegetables.  Vegetables and most of our food today is grown using superphosphate fertilizers.  Most often, vegetables can absorb the toxic potassium in the fertilizers and change some of it to a non-toxic form.  However, this is not always the case, especially with sweeter vegetables such as sweet potatoes, yams and carrots.  Lately, for example, some carrots seem to contain more of this toxic potassium.

Also, some of our vegetables are really fruits, and have the same problem of toxic potassium buildup as the other fruits.  These include all the nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant),  cucumbers, okra, and summer squashes, in particular.  This is one reason these foods are not recommended as part of a nutritional balancing diet.

 

4. Potassium from a water softener.  In a few cases, showering and perhaps drinking water softened with potassium tablets will elevate hair potassium level drastically.  This is also a toxic form of potassium, and I would never drink water softened with potassium, or with salt or sodium, for that matter.

If you bathe in water that is softened with potassium, before sampling the hair for a hair mineral analysis, wash and rinse the hair thoroughly with either regular tap water, or distilled or reverse osmosis water.  Do this two times if you regularly bath in water softened with potassium.  I would try to avoid taking a lot of baths in water softened with potassium, as some will be absorbed this way.

 

5. Sexual fluids.  Human male and female sexual fluids contain a lot of toxic potassium.  I do not know exactly why it accumulates in these fluids, but it does.  These are ‘lower chakra’ fluids and this may have something to do with it.

Those who swallow this fluid on a regular basis, or rub it on the body, or absorb it through the vagina or elsewhere, will also often show a high hair potassium level on a retest hair analysis after being on a nutritional balancing program for a while.  The toxic form of potassium may be one reason that swallowing or otherwise absorbing male or female sexual fluid can give one a buzz or a zing, as can eating fruit.

By the way, fruit is the ovary of plant.  So it appears that toxic potassium has an affinity for the sexual organs of both human beings and plants.

 

6. Pregnant women.  When pregnant, women accumulate more toxic potassium.  When pregnancy is over, they eliminate a lot of it and it shows up in their hair mineral tests as a rise in the hair potassium level.

 

7. All babies.  All babies are born with a lot of toxic potassium.  this is from their mothers.  If a baby is well-nourished and well-cared for, he or she will eliminate toxic potassium within about 3-4 months of birth.  If the child is not well-nourished, the toxic potassium can remain in the body for years.

 

8. Homosexuals.  We often see high levels of toxic potassium eliminated from the bodies of homosexual men after they have been on a nutritional balancing program for a few months up to a few years.

 

9. Krill.  Krill, a relative of the shrimp, contains some toxic potassium.  Some health authorities recommend krill as a source of omega-3 fatty acids.  However, anyone who uses this oil may accumulate a lot of this toxic form of potassium.  I do not recommend krill oil for this reason alone.

 

10. Potassium supplements and medical drugs that contain potassium.  Most potassium supplements are of a toxic nature.  These include potassium chelate and potassium chloride.

Also, some medical drugs may contain these or other less desirable forms of potassium.

 

DOES THE TOXIC POTASSIUM HAVE ANY FUNCTION AT ALL?

 

Yes, it seems to have a stimulating effect.  It is slightly different from but not totally dissimilar to the effect of the amigos (toxic iron, manganese, and compounds of aluminum, nickel, and others).  For more on this topic, read The Amigos on this website.

Also, like the amigos, the body seems unable to convert the toxic potassium to usable forms, so it must be eliminated.

 

TOXIC POTASSIUM ON A HAIR MINERAL ANALYSIS

 

This will show up on a retest hair analysis, usually, although in babies it may show up on an initial hair mineral test.

The main indicator for it is usually an extremely low sodium/potassium ratio, often without symptoms that would normally correlate with such a low sodium/potassium ratio.  An important fact about human life is that it cannot continue with a sodium/potassium ratio less than about 0.3.  If the ratio is less, or even if it is very low, about 0.3 to 0.6, often part of the potassium reading is an elimination of toxic potassium.

Such a low ratio on a retest hair mineral test should cause the practitioner to look further into causes for an elimination or presence of toxic potassium.  Usually, it is not hard to find.

Often, when the sodium/potassium ratio decreases suddenly to 0.6 or less, the client experiences healing, and the two events may well be related.

In most cases, the sodium/potassium ratio returns to a more normal level on the next hair analysis.  This indicates that the elimination of toxic potassium is over, at least for the time being.  This cycle may occur several times during a nutritional balancing program, indicating the elimination of various deposits of toxic potassium. 

 

THE SUPERPHOSPHATE FERTILIZER DISASTER

 

The use of superphosphate fertilizers or N-P-K fertilizers is an essential part of modern industrial and chemical agriculture that began about 100 years ago.  They are really the basis for the so-called “green revolution” in agriculture that increased crop yields dramatically.

However, the N-P-K fertilizers have weakened the plants, made them more yin in Chinese medical terms, made them more vulnerable to pests and disease, and damaged the soil, as well.  They also have introduced toxic forms of potassium into our nation’s soils, foods and into the people and animals who eat these farm products.

William Albrecht in America, Andre Voisin in France and others warned that these fertilizers were mainly growth stimulants that would cause problems in the future. However, their voices were not heard, and in some cases they were silenced.  The benefits of N-P-K fertilization seemed so great that how could anyone doubt their effectiveness? 

It was a time of great scientific discovery and great profits for the agribusiness companies who made the fertilizers and the pesticides that followed.  So, even at prestigious universities that were funded by certain companies and individuals, scientists were told in no uncertain terms, to stop whining about possible problems with what they called N-P-K science.

Today, these fertilizers are approved for use on organic and non-organic crops around the world.  Billions of tons of them have been spread on the fields, and they continue to be used on every crop imaginable.

The situation is similar to that of antibiotics, which seemed so amazing 70 years ago that any objections were silenced or ignored.  Today, however, we see a few of the serious adverse effects of  the wholesale use of these toxic drugs.  Hospital infections are rampant, antibiotic-resistant bugs are developing, and the entire population has been poisoned by antibiotic use and by antibiotics showing up in the water supply.  This is very similar to the problem of superphosphates and toxic forms of potassium. 

 

BETTER AND WORSE FORMS OF POTASSIUM

 

            Potassium is used to make at least 100 compounds, some of which are fed to animals and human beings, and others of which are spread on the soils of the earth.  Among those which our bodies can use easily are potassium bicarbonate and perhaps potassium citrate, to a degree. 

Toxic forms of potassium.  Most of the others, however, fall in the category I am calling toxic forms of potassium.

            These include the following potassium compounds: acetate, bitartrate, carbonate (used in fertilizers), cyanide, chelate (used in supplements), chloride (used in medicine), gluconate (used in supplements), guaiacolsulfonate, iodide (used to protect from radioactive iodine), iodate, nitrate (used in fertilizers), nitrite, oxides, oxalate, mono and dibasic phosphate (used in fertilizers), permanganate, sulfates and potassium sodium tartrate.

            You can see, there are many more toxic forms than there are non-toxic forms of potassium.  However, they are not too toxic, so they are widely used in industry, agriculture and even in medicine.

            In fact, the toxic forms will correct some imbalances and deficiency states, but not all of them, in human beings and animals.  As a result, doctors and soil specialists have falsely concluded that they are harmless.  However, they are not as good as the proper forms of potassium in our food, and in our supplements and medications.

 

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE WHICH POTASSIUM COMPOUND IS USED?

 

            The differences are subtle, but our bodies know the difference.  We know this because as I study hair mineral testing more, I am aware that as a body heals, it often throws off the more toxic forms of potassium as they are replaced with the more physiological or more biologically active forms of potassium. 

            This is just one indicator.  Another is that the plants, animals and human beings that are fed the wrong kinds of potassium, such as that found in fruits today, are not feeling well at all.  When we change the form of potassium by substituting more cooked vegetables for the fruit, for example, people feel better.

            The toxic forms of potassium tend to be more yin in Chinese medicine, and they do not nourish the heart and the rest of our bodies as well.

 

WHY DON’T MORE DOCTORS AND NUTRITIONISTS DISCUSS THIS IF IT IS TRUE?

 

            One reason is that it is a recent problem.  For example, the diet researcher, Weston A. Price, DDS, did not discuss it because it was not a problem when he lived, about 100 years ago.  So today his followers and the foundations that bear his name continue to recommend fruits.  However, our fruits are different today, and much less healthful, and such recommendations are causing many problems for people.

The followers of Weston Price include many current dietary systems such as the GAPS diet, the SCD or Specific Carbohydrate Diet and several others.  They all still recommend fruit, although it is not the same food that it was 100 years ago.

The same goes for followers of Herbert Shelton and the Natural Hygiene movement, followers of Bernard Jensen, DC, ND, naturopathic followers, and many others.

 

WHAT IF YOU RAISE YOUR OWN FRUIT AND DON’T USE SUPERPHOSPHATE  OR N-P-K FERTILIZERS ON IT?

 

            It is hard to raise fruit without superphosphates today.  However, even if you do, the N-P-K fertilizers are in all the water supplies – all of them.  So you are still fertilizing your fruit with some, even if you don’t add it to the soil.  In addition, it appears as though all fruit contains some toxic potassium, which is associated with the reproductive organs.  Fruit, by definition, is the expanded ovary of a plant.

            Home grown fruit will be better, but there are other problems with fruit, such as its yin quality, in Chinese medical terms.  As a result, even if you can raise fruit without any, which is hardly possible, I don’t recommend eating fleshy fruit as it is so yin.  Fruit in restaurants and marketplaces is also often contaminated with yeast, hepatitis C and perhaps parasites, and these are other problems with it.  Fruit also upsets the blood sugar, another serious problem for most people today.  Eating fruit alone is better, but does not solve the other problems with it.

 

DOES THE PROBLEM MAINLY AFFECT FRUITS AND NIGHTSHADE VEGETABLES?

 

            It may also affect wine, which is a fruit-based beverage, and fruit juices, as well.  Drinking water supplies are also contaminated in some areas.

In fact, it may affect all of our food today – all of it.  So the real question becomes, what can we do about it, since giving up food is not an option, and growing all of our own is not really an option for most people.

One of the features of the nutritional balancing diet is that it seeks to compensate for this, as much as possible.  The only way to do this, so far, is to have people eat a tremendous amount of cooked vegetables.

 

TOXIC POTASSIUM IS A “CHILD MINERAL”

 

A “child mineral” is a mineral that children today are born with that needs to be eliminated.  When it is present, it causes a child to continue to be “a baby” in some ways.  It is also associated with the following personality traits: stubborn, childish, laughs nervously, dependent, somewhat obsessive-compulsive, insecure and fussy. 

When it is eliminated from the body, the baby, child or an adult often become more mature, and less dependent.  This is an interesting phenomenon.  Other child minerals are copper, mercury and aluminum.  To read more about this topic, please read Child Minerals on this website.

 

TOXIC POTASSIUM AND HAIR LOSS

 

As toxic potassium is eliminated, it may damage hair follicles and cause a temporary hair loss, particularly in women.  Once the toxic potassium is out of the body, the hair usually grows back.

 

TOXIC POTASSIUM MAY BALANCE HIGHER ESTROGEN DURING PREGNANCY

 

A theory is that toxic potassium somehow balances high estrogen in the body.  In nutritional balancing theory, sodium is more associated with estrogen, while potassium is more associated with progesterone.

This could be why toxic potassium is eliminated after pregnancy, when the estrogen level decreases.  Babies are born with some estrogen from their mothers.   As they eliminate this, they may also eliminate their extra toxic potassium.
