Warning: We do not recommend drinking distilled water. The reason is that it is too low in minerals. It will actually leach minerals from the body, which is terrible. Adding minerals to distilled water does not seem to work well.
However, having a water distiller is a safety measure. If one's drinking water should become poisoned, one could drink distilled water for a day or two with no problem until one can obtain better drinking water. This is the reason for this article.
One can also use distilled water in a steam mop to wash the floor and for a steam bath.
DISTILLER PROBLEM AREAS
1. The fuse. Megahome water distillers are of high quality, but are costly and have a problem. They stop working after a while. I fixed the problem by opening the bottom and removing an electrical device in the wiring. It looks like a resistor or diode, and it says it is a fuse. It could be something else.
It is covered up. The removal procedure is:
Remove one screw to open the bottom of the distiller. Locate and uncover the device in the wiring. Cut the two wires that go to the device and remove the device. Twist the two cut ends of the wires together and cover them with a wire nut. I don't know if other brands of water distillers have the same problem.
2. Sealing ring. I bought a used Megahome distiller on Ebay and the rubber ring on the top section was sticky. This made it difficult to open the unit to put in the source water. For about $5.00 I was able to buy a replacement ring that works fine.
3. Leak. The used Megahome distiller was leaking water from where the top meets the body of the distiller. It requires a washer placed correctly around the place where the steam enters the stainless steel condenser tube.
I was able to take the top apart by removing three screws. Then one can remove two screws holding the motor on. Then the top comes apart more and one can put the washer back in its proper position. If the washer is gone, one would have to put on a new one. This solved the leak. The motor screws were also coming loose and one can tighten them up. Do this gently because one could strip the screws.
4. The reset button. A used machine was missing the plastic reset button, which is very important. However, there is a button slightly inside, and that worked fine.
5. The spout. The spout has a strange arrangement that does not look clean. It is designed for a carbon filter. I removed the spout and use it without the spout or carbon filter. I'm not sure that is best, but it works.
6. Power cord. It comes with a nice-looking power cord, but we don't trust anything new. So I use an old power cord that fits and works fine.
